Two small mistakes in your code:
UCSRB = (1 < < RXEN) | (1 << TXEN);
UCSRC = (1 < < UCSZ1) | (1 << UCSZ0);

needs to be

UCSRB = (1 << RXEN) | (1 << TXEN);
UCSRC = (1 << UCSZ1) | (1 << UCSZ0);

Then it works
