Scott, you’re crazy!

In case you didn’t know, until yesterday my main desktop workstation computer consisted of a 1.4ghz pc i built from spare parts and three (3!) 17” monitors hooked up to 3 video cards. Over the past few months, I’ve acquired two more decent video cards that’re supported well in unix. For a few weeks i’ve been walking around with a comp that has 5 video cards. I jokingly talked about eventually hooking up five monitors in the past, but never seriously. I considered 4, but without a “center”, a desktop workstation feels so uneven. Yesterday, someone came to my house and dumped off a lot of comp equipment… in the pile was a perfect monitor!! I then realized I had five… The planning began.

After 30 minutes of planning in my head and drawing layouts with dry erase makers on my glass desk, I realized I couldn’t fit five monitors on my desks unless I stacked some vertically. This didn’t seem like a good idea. I finally decided to move my room around. My two longdesks were in a | shape, with a tv in the crease. I moved them to a / \ shape last night. Talk about crazy. I had to rewire lots of ethernet connections and stuff of that sort to get it to reach. But, nevertheless, it’s finished. Five monitors. I’ll think of a way to add a pic soon. Once completed, I whipped out my dry erase marker and started doing some math on my desk. 1152×864 resolution times 5 screens is 5760×864 resolution. wow. Now, at a 16-bit color depth… let’s see… thats about 16,000,000 colors per pixel. 5760×864 gives me 4.93664 million pixles on my desk. multiply that by 16 million possible colors and that gives you 78.9 trillion possible color combonations across my 5 screens. with those 78.9 trillion combonations, inside will be every image on the internet, the most breathtaking images, the most beautiful 3d landscapes, the cleanest anime, the most amazing images. So, let’s see, how long would it take to make a cool image randomly like this? well, i dont think you realize how large 78.9 trillion is. That’s 78,985,240,000,000 combonations. What if i wrote a program to try a new combonation every second. At that rate it’d take 2,594,640 years. That’s over 2 and 1/2 million years. Interesting ‘eh?

No, I’m not dead. I’m just… dormant posted on 01/27/03
allright. lots of things have happened since my last post almost a month ago. /soft sigh/ I really have so many thing I want to say and explain to people, but I just dont have the time now. However, just for future reference, I think I’ll list randomly (in no order whatsoever) things that have been going on the last month in my life, then add a number after it. The number is how important it is to me. First of all, notice the to me*. Sometimes, I find myself pouring over little tiny things that no one cares about, but they have great value in my life. Also, note that ‘important’ might not be a good word. The number (1, 2, 3, 4 or 5) will be how often I think about this idea or event or how much I continue to do it. 1 would mean it happened, i dont really care, i never think about it. Likewise, a 5 would be something that I really find myself thinking about a lot and can’t help these thoughts from rolling around in my head. I’m sure you’re smart enough to figure out that the middle numbers are ‘in the middle’ ^_^
